Hello, I’m Karen,
I am an Occupational Therapist with 29 years of experience and passion for mental health care. I am dedicated to supporting individuals to feel safe in their environment, connected with their community, motivated to reach their potential in daily activities, and improve their quality of life.
I maintain a holistic and evidence-based approach to care, which is considerate of the mental, physical, emotional, social, spiritual and cultural aspects of each individual's health and wellbeing. I believe in the importance of a balanced lifestyle and value my role as a mother.
While I have specialised in working with adults living with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), I also have experience supporting individuals across the lifespan with complex disability needs, aligned with their goals and values for engagement in activities of daily living.
As part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, I have assisted with the facilitation of group therapy programs, including a Trauma Recovery Program. I have also facilitated a community integration program to support the development of independent living skills, through participation in meaningful leisure and social activities, such as art, music, kayaking, tai chi, and computers.
Interventions
I am committed to a client-centred, strengths-based, values-guided, trauma-informed approach to therapy. My practice framework is aligned with a Recovery Model of Care that promotes connectedness, hope, identity, meaning and empowerment.
I have experience in completing self-care, sensory and functional capacity assessments, as well as motivational interviewing, psychosocial support, emotion regulation, and practical skills to improve daily living and assist individuals with achieving their goals.
